My B2B content examples library

If you lead the content function, you need a content examples library.

Here’s why:

I had dinner with a marketing VP who was frustrated with her in-house content writer.

The VP wanted depth.
The writer kept delivering surface-level content.

But the problem wasn’t ability ... it was lack of understanding. The writer literally didn’t know what “depth” looked like!

The VP kept saying, “Be less tactical. Be more strategic.”

But the writer, a young professional, just couldn’t picture it.

I asked the VP, “Do you have a content examples library so you can show her the kind of content you're looking for?”

She didn't.

When I told her I use my examples library to train new and junior content marketers, she was like, "That’s exactly what I need!"

At first, my "library" was just a messy Google Doc with a bunch of links and screenshots in it. Now my library lives inside Notion, and it's organized to reflect the way I work with clients.

Each example is tagged by:

âś… Format
âś… Element
âś… Competency

(If you're just joining us, "elements" and "competencies" are building blocks of bold content. There are 4 elements of bold content — originality, novelty, proof & depth. Within each element, there are 7-8 competencies marketers can master.)

When I tell a client, “We need to build x competency,” I can pull up real examples to show them what I mean.

It closes the understanding gap.

The research strategy that lands press coverage and drives pipeline
My client published their first research report this week. Next day, they got press coverage in an industry pub with 2.8 million subscribers! 🥳 1. We surveyed industry professionals & their clients. When you survey two audiences (e.g., attorneys and their clients), you get the opportunity to surface misalignment. Publications love this stuff. 2. We also included anonymized data from my client's...
What does it mean to be "bold" in B2B?
“What does it mean to be bold?” I’ve been thinking a lot about this question lately. And trying to articulate what it means to be bold within the context of B2B marketing. (If you've been on my email list for a while, you’ve had a front-row seat to the Erin Attempts To Define Bold show. Thanks for tuning in.) So many of us want to be bold. We know that bold marketing can help us stand out in a ...
Originality: The most powerful element of bold content
In my last email, I introduced you to the Bland to Bold Framework™, a diagnostic that helps you assess how bold or bland your content is by measuring the presence of four elements: Originality Novelty Proof Depth Today's email is about the first element: originality. I define originality as the distinctiveness of your perspective and personality.   “Perspective and personality? Erm, wait ...
